Chandigarh, Jan 4, 2026 – Microblogging platform X announced it will remove illegal content and permanently suspend accounts responsible for uploading it, including users misusing its AI service, Grok. The statement came hours after India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) issued a notice directing the platform to act against unlawful content.
“Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” Elon Musk said on X, responding to concerns about “inappropriate images.”
Global Government Affairs at X said the platform works with local governments and law enforcement as needed. “We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and cooperating with authorities,” the statement said.
The notice from Meity, dated January 2, directed X to remove obscene, vulgar, or unlawful content, particularly that generated by AI app Grok, and to submit an action report within 72 hours. The ministry cited complaints and public discourse over misuse of Grok to create and share obscene images of women.
Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi had earlier written to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeking urgent intervention after multiple incidents of AI-generated vulgar content surfaced online.
X’s Global Government Affairs account also shared its platform rules, allowing “consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behaviour,” provided it is properly labelled and not prominently displayed.
Officials said the platform’s action follows a pattern of increasing oversight by Meity after it found social media companies were not adequately policing obscene and unlawful content.
