Bathinda, May 3: A 22-year-old man from Sri Ganganagar allegedly shot a 17-year-old girl in the head before turning the weapon on himself in Bathinda’s Parsaram Nagar on Saturday evening. Both died on the spot, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Hitesh Arora, a resident of Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan, and the girl, a resident of Street No. 29, Parsaram Nagar in Bathinda. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. when the two were alone at the girl’s house.
Hearing the sound of gunshots, neighbours rushed to the scene and found the two lying in a pool of blood.
Police and local emergency group Sahara Janseva were informed, and both bodies were sent to the Civil Hospital morgue for postmortem.
Senior officers, including SP City Narinder Singh and a team from Canal Colony Police Station, arrived at the site and launched an investigation.
“A pistol was recovered from the scene, which appears to have been brought by the youth,” SP Narinder Singh said.
He confirmed that a case has been registered and both families are being questioned.
Preliminary inquiries suggest the two knew each other from Sri Ganganagar, where the girl had studied earlier.
She had recently completed her senior secondary education and was living in Bathinda with her mother.
“Something may have occurred during the visit that led to the shooting. We are analysing their mobile phones to understand the circumstances,” the SP added.
Police said the motive behind the act remains unclear and all angles, including the nature of their relationship and any recent disputes, are being explored.
