New Delhi, 28 Nov. 24: The central government has blocked over 6.7 lakh suspected SIM cards and 1.3 lakh IMEI numbers till November 15 this year as part of its efforts to combat cybercrime. The Union Home Ministry shared the update in the Rajya Sabha on November 27, emphasizing measures to disrupt cybercriminal networks.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar detailed the mechanism to address digital frauds, highlighting the role of telecom service providers in identifying international spoof calls linked to scams like the “FedEx scam” and impersonation of officials. He noted that steps have been taken to intercept suspicious international calls.
The ministry also outlined the impact of the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System launched in 2021 under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). Over 9.9 lakh complaints have been registered, leading to the recovery of more than ₹3,431 crore from cyber fraudsters.
