Yellow Smog Alert Issued for Punjab Amid Cold

Chandigarh, 28 November 2024 – Punjab faces increasing challenges as fog and smog disrupt visibility and slow highway traffic with the Meteorological Department issuing a yellow smog alert for 15 districts, including Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Patiala, effective until November 29.

Experts predict worsening conditions with temperatures dropping below 7 degrees Celsius in the coming days due to light snowfall in the northern mountains.

The department noted that while urban areas are experiencing smog, rural regions and highways are facing reduced visibility caused by dense fog, particularly in the early morning hours.

Commuters traveling long distances are experiencing delays, with transport services enormously affected.

Temperatures across Punjab have plummeted, with the mercury dipping to as low as 2 degrees Celsius this week in certain regions. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature in major cities hovered around 26 degrees Celsius, while the minimum ranged between 9 and 10 degrees.

Meteorologists forecast cloudy weather next week, likely reducing sunshine and intensifying the cold. Experts anticipate the combined impact of fog and cold to persist for 3–4 days, affecting public life and travel across the state.
