Strict Laws Needed for Sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib: Akal Takht Jathedar

Amritsar, April 5: Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, has called upon the Central and Punjab governments to enact special and stringent laws to deal with sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

In a statement issued from the Office Secretariat of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Jathedar Gargajj emphasized that the Guru Granth Sahib is the eternal Guru of the Sikhs, and any incident of sacrilege deeply wounds the sentiments of Sikhs across the world.

Jathedar Gargajj recently spoke via video call to Bhai Gurjit Singh Khalsa, who has been protesting atop a tower in Samana, Patiala for nearly six months demanding such laws.

He urged Bhai Gurjit Singh to end his hunger strike but assured him that Sri Akal Takht Sahib and the global Sikh community stand firmly with him.

He also criticised political parties for failing to legislate against sacrilege despite repeated incidents in Punjab and other states for over a decade.

“The SGPC and its leaders have passed multiple resolutions demanding strict laws, but governments have not acted,” he said.

Jathedar Gargajj questioned whether making such a law threatens national unity or strengthens harmony.

He said it is vital to recognize the unique religious status of Guru Granth Sahib Ji and ensure laws are tailored accordingly.

He also called for similar protections for sacred texts of all religions, reflecting the country’s diverse spiritual landscape.
