Lahaul, April 11 —Following the tragic drowning of two youths from Jharkhand in the Chandra River, the Lahaul-Spiti district administration has issued a strict advisory prohibiting tourists from approaching riverbeds or entering water streams in the region.
To enforce the order, authorities have invoked Section 111 of the Himachal Pradesh Police Act, 2007. Tourists found violating the directive may face imprisonment of up to eight days, a fine between Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000, or both.
“Tourists often underestimate the dangers of fast-flowing rivers and slippery banks, especially during the summer when snowmelt increases water levels,” a district official said.
Thousands of visitors flock to Lahaul each year, many risking their safety for selfies or riverside photos. The recent incident has prompted stepped-up enforcement, with police increasing surveillance at key tourist areas and riverside points.
Authorities have appealed to tourists to behave responsibly and avoid putting their lives at risk for temporary thrills.
