Amritsar, April 13: A suspected drug and weapon smuggler sustained a gunshot wound during a brief exchange of fire with police in the Ramdass area of Amritsar on Saturday evening. The accused, identified as Palwinder Singh alias Pala of Jatta village, was injured in the leg and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ramdass.

According to Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh, the incident occurred during a recovery operation at Kassowal village, following the arrest of Palwinder Singh and another accused, Baljinder Singh alias Balraj of Machiwala village. The two were earlier apprehended with a .30-bore pistol from Ghonewal village under the Ramdas police station jurisdiction.

Both suspects were presented in court and subsequently remanded to police custody. During questioning, Palwinder Singh disclosed the location of a heroin consignment hidden in Kassowal village, prompting police to escort him there.

Gurvinder Singh Aulakh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ajnala, said the team recovered 523 grams of heroin from the site. “As the recovery was underway, Palwinder Singh pulled out a concealed pistol and fired at the police team in an attempt to flee,” Aulakh stated.

Police personnel narrowly avoided injury and responded in self-defence, injuring Singh in the leg. He was immediately shifted to a hospital.

Authorities said further investigation is ongoing to identify links and trace the wider network involved in the smuggling operation.
