MALOUT, May 18: A suspected member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was arrested following a brief exchange of fire with police on the outskirts of Malout town late Saturday night, Muktsar police said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Abhishek of Sitto Gunno village in Fazilka district, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the encounter and is currently under treatment at Malout Civil Hospital.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Detective) Ramanpreet Gill said the confrontation took place during a routine patrol and vehicle checking operation carried out by the CIA Malout team on Abohar Road.
“On spotting the police, the suspect tried to flee. When the police gave chase, he opened fire at them. In retaliation, the police also fired, during which the accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was taken into custody and rushed to the Malout civil hospital,” DSP Gill said.
According to police, Abhishek is linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and is believed to have been involved in the supply of firearms. “Two robbery cases are already registered against him in Haryana,” Gill added.
Police recovered two pistols and two live cartridges from the suspect. An investigation is underway to trace his network and the source of the seized weapons.
