Kathua, Aug 11: A Pakistani national was shot at and apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) on Monday after he allegedly crossed into Indian territory and ignored repeated warnings along the International Border (IB) in Kathua district, officials said.
According to a BSF spokesperson, troops stationed at a forward post detected suspicious movement in the early hours and observed a man approaching the border fence from the Pakistani side. The intruder was reportedly advancing in an “aggressive manner” despite being challenged multiple times.
“Repeated warnings were issued to stop and return, but the individual ignored them and continued moving towards the fence,” the spokesperson said. “Given the threat perception, BSF personnel fired at his legs to neutralise the situation.”
The man sustained bullet injuries and was immediately taken into custody by the BSF. First aid was administered at the site, after which he was shifted to a medical facility for further treatment under security cover.
Officials confirmed that a formal protest has been lodged with the Pakistani Rangers over the incident, in line with established border protocols. The identity of the intruder and his motives are yet to be ascertained.
Incidents of infiltration attempts from across the IB have been reported periodically in the Jammu region, with security agencies maintaining heightened alert, especially in the run-up to national events and during times of increased cross-border tension.
Authorities said the matter is under investigation and further questioning will be carried out once the intruder’s medical condition allows.
