Tricity: Afternoon Showers Bring Mercury Down

Chandigarh, Aug 11 — Moderate to heavy showers on Monday afternoon and evening disrupted normal life across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, bringing a dip of more than 4°C in day temperatures and triggering waterlogging in several areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for another round of heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, at isolated places in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana from Wednesday to Friday.

The rain hit the tricity in two main spells — around 12:30 p.m. and again near 4 p.m. — inundating low-lying areas and clogging major roads, resulting in traffic snarls. The Municipal Corporation faced renewed criticism for failing to clear road gullies, with residents blaming poor maintenance for the recurring waterlogging.

In the past 24 hours, Chandigarh received 14 mm of rain — 10.8 mm during the day and 3.2 mm between 5:30 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m. Monday. Mohali recorded 6.5 mm, while Panchkula got 6 mm. “The showers brought welcome relief from the hot and humid weather,” an IMD official said.

Chandigarh’s maximum temperature settled at 30.4°C, while the minimum was 26.5°C. The weather office has forecast partly to generally cloudy skies with the possibility of thunderstorms and rain in the tricity over the next five days, until August 15.
