LUDHIANA, Aug. 24 — A man with several criminal cases pending against him was gunned down late Saturday night in Ludhiana’s Sundar Nagar Chowk, in what police believe was linked to a gang feud.
The victim, identified as Kartik Baggan, was riding a scooter with his friend Sarwan when unidentified bike-borne assailants opened fire from behind, police said. Both men fell to the ground after Sarwan was struck in the back. The attackers then fired multiple rounds at Baggan, killing him on the spot before speeding away.
Sarwan, who sustained a gunshot wound, was taken to Christian Medical College and Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Davinder Chaudhary said an investigation is underway. “We are scanning CCTV footage of the area to trace the assailants. An FIR has been registered against unidentified attackers,” he noted.
According to police sources, Baggan was facing trial in several criminal cases, including attempt to murder, assault on police officers and possession of illegal arms. Initial investigation points to the possibility of a gang war, with officials stating that Baggan was linked to the notorious Puneet Bains gang.
Following the shooting, a heavy police presence was deployed in the area to prevent any further disturbances. “We are examining all angles, and gang rivalry appears to be the most likely motive,” officials added.
