Punjab leaders seek immediate central aid after floods

Chandigarh, August 31: Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and Congress legislature party (CLP) leader Partap Singh Bajwa have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent central assistance following widespread flooding in the state.

In separate letters, both leaders highlighted the floods’ severe impact on thousands of families and large areas of submerged farmland, stressing the need for immediate relief and long-term flood management measures.

Jakhar noted that heavy rainfall in upper hilly regions had intensified the floods, causing extensive damage from the Bhoa assembly constituency to Fazilka, and across districts including Kapurthala. “The devastation is widespread, and swift action is needed. I urge the Prime Minister to deploy central assessment teams and announce a special relief package to support the affected population,” he wrote.

Bajwa, meanwhile, requested that the Prime Minister personally visit the state, provide immediate compensation for the deceased and affected farmers, and initiate a long-term flood management plan to mitigate future disasters. “Punjab requires both urgent relief and a sustainable strategy to prevent such tragedies,” he noted.

The letters come amid mounting concerns over the floods’ toll on agriculture and local communities, with officials warning that prolonged waterlogging and damaged infrastructure could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
