New Delhi, Sept. 30 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s new peace proposal for Gaza, calling it a realistic route to lasting stability in the conflict-torn region.
Trump, joined by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Monday, unveiled a 20-point plan aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas war and creating a temporary governing board in Gaza. The board would be chaired by Trump and include international figures such as former British prime minister Tony Blair.
In a post on X, Modi said: “We welcome President Donald J Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region.” He expressed hope that “all concerned will come together behind President Trump’s initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace.”
The proposal outlines steps for a ceasefire, hostage exchanges, phased Israeli withdrawal and the demilitarization of Hamas. Netanyahu said Israel agreed to the framework but stressed his country would maintain security oversight in Gaza. “This is a historic opportunity, but if Hamas refuses, Israel will act on its own,” he noted.
It remains unclear whether Hamas will accept the terms. Analysts said the plan’s fate depends on Hamas’ response and on how the proposed transitional administration in Gaza is structured.
The announcement drew international reactions, with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen also welcoming the proposal, saying it offered “a chance to restart a political horizon for peace.”
