Moga, October 17: Moga Police handed over 250 mobile phones to their rightful owners, tracing them through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) — a national portal developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to help citizens track and block lost or stolen phones.

Sharing details, SSP Ajay Gandhi said that since January 1, 2025, the Moga police have traced and returned nearly 1,000 mobile phones, many of which had been stolen or lost across Punjab and other states. “This initiative reflects our effort to merge technology with policing for faster, citizen-friendly results,” Gandhi said.

He urged people to promptly report lost devices on the CEIR portal (www.ceir.gov.in) for quick recovery and prevention of misuse. The system, he noted, has helped curb the illegal trade of stolen mobile phones, which are often linked to fraudulent or criminal activities.

Warning against buying used phones from unknown sellers, the SSP advised the public to insist on proper ownership proof and purchase documentation. “Do not buy phones from suspicious sources. A device without papers could be stolen property — and may land the buyer in legal trouble,” he said.

He also appealed to citizens to deposit unclaimed or abandoned phones at the nearest police station or return them to the owner if identifiable, to prevent potential misuse such as identity theft or cyber fraud.

The Moga police have increasingly relied on digital policing tools such as CEIR, CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems), and Cyber Cell analytics to improve public service delivery and strengthen citizen trust in technology-backed law enforcement.
