Chandigarh, Nov 7: Chandigarh recorded its lowest night temperature of the season on Thursday, dipping to 12.8°C, 1.8°C below the normal for this time of year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The fall came after Wednesday’s minimum had been 16.4°C.
“After Tuesday night’s light rainfall due to a Western Disturbance, this drop was expected,” said Surender Paul, IMD Chandigarh director. “Even Chandigarh recorded 0.6 mm of rain. Cold Northwesterly winds have started blowing, and temperatures are likely to decline rapidly in the coming days.”
While Thursday marked the coldest night so far, temperatures typically drop further towards late November. Last year, the city recorded 8.7°C on November 29. Maximum temperatures also fell, going from 29.7°C on Wednesday to 28.3°C on Thursday, about 1°C below normal.
The IMD forecast over the next three days shows maximum temperatures hovering between 26°C and 27°C, while minimums are expected to remain around 11°C to 12°C.
Despite Gurpurb celebrations and firecrackers in the city, air quality remained moderate. The Central Pollution Control Board reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 156 in Chandigarh. Panchkula, however, saw a deterioration to 275, classified as poor.
Paul also pointed to above-average rainfall for November. “After above-normal rain in October, we are likely to see the same trend this month. The forecast is prepared by studying global meteorological systems, and above-normal rainfall is on the horizon,” he said. Chandigarh has already witnessed a rare Western Disturbance this week, unusual for November.
