Panipat, Dec 22: Four men accused in an extortion case were arrested after a brief police encounter in Haryana’s Panipat district on Monday, during which one of the suspects was shot in the leg, police said.
The encounter took place in the Israna area during a joint operation by the Panipat CIA-1 unit and the Special Task Force from Sonepat. The injured accused, identified as Parmeet, was admitted to the Civil Hospital, police said.
The other three accused — Devender, Sahil and Aman — were also taken into custody. All four are residents of Shaharmalpur village in Panipat district.
Panipat Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh said the men were wanted in connection with an extortion demand of Rs 2.5 crore from a local businessman earlier this month.
“The accused had allegedly threatened a businessman, Yashpal Garg, on December 18, demanding Rs 2.5 crore in the name of the Bambiha gang,” Singh said.
He said multiple police teams were formed after the case was registered to trace the suspects.
Police recovered three weapons from the accused, including two foreign-made pistols and one country-made pistol, officials said.
Further investigation is underway.
