Ropar, Dec 30: Potato farmers in Punjab have been advised to remain on alert after Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ropar warned of a possible outbreak of late blight disease following recent changes in weather.
The advisory noted that cooler temperatures, high humidity and light drizzle across several districts have created conditions conducive to the spread of the fungal disease, which can destroy potato crops within days if left unchecked.
“Districts such as Ropar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and SBS Nagar are particularly vulnerable at this stage,” agricultural experts said.
Dr. Satbir Singh of KVK Ropar said farmers should conduct frequent field inspections. “Early intervention can significantly reduce losses. Delayed action often leads to irreversible damage,” he said.
Explaining the symptoms, Dr. Urvi Sharma said the disease initially affects the lower foliage. “Leaves show water-soaked lesions that gradually darken. In high humidity, a white fungal layer may be visible beneath the leaves,” she said.
KVK Ropar has advised farmers to undertake preventive fungicide spraying and, where infection is detected, to switch to recommended systemic fungicides at prescribed intervals. A follow-up spray using contact fungicides has also been advised.
Farmers have been cautioned to use adequate water during spraying and avoid unapproved chemical mixtures, which could reduce effectiveness and increase resistance.
