Amritsar, Feb 13: Progress on the Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Scheme (ABWSS) was positively reviewed by a World Bank monitoring team on Friday. The delegation conducted on-site evaluations of the water treatment infrastructure and overhead storage tanks, highlighting the project’s role in providing uninterrupted clean water to the city’s residents.
The project involves sourcing water from the Upper Bari Doab Canal, which will be processed at the Vallah treatment plant before being routed through a new 112 km pipeline network. Officials present during the visit noted that the vast majority of the pipeline work—approximately 95 km—has already been successfully executed.
“World Bank representatives noted their satisfaction with the construction quality and the overall progress of the distribution network,” a project official mentioned.
During a detailed coordination meeting, MC Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill updated the visitors on measures taken to expedite the work, including resolving previous labor shortages. The Commissioner mentioned that the workforce has been bolstered to meet the upcoming deadlines for the treatment plant and the remaining overhead tanks.
“We have consistently instructed the executing agency to address any shortages to ensure the project meets its goals,” Shergill directly said.
The meeting was attended by senior project managers and engineers who provided technical briefs on the structural integrity of the newly built reservoirs at Golbagh and near the SSP office. The project remains a central part of the city’s strategy to modernize urban infrastructure through international financial and technical cooperation.
