Ropar, Feb 22: Residents from both sides of the Punjab and Himachal Pradesh border staged a joint protest at the Mehatpur entry toll barrier in Una district today, opposing a sharp increase in vehicle entry taxes. The demonstration follows a recent decision by the Himachal Pradesh government to raise the entry fee for vehicles registered outside the state from Rs 70 to Rs 170.
The protest saw a significant gathering of traders, daily commuters, and lawyers who frequently cross the state boundary for professional and personal reasons. Protesters stated that the sudden hike imposes an unsustainable financial burden on those who rely on cross-border movement for healthcare, education, and commerce. Leaders from various political backgrounds joined the demonstration, asserting that the shared social and economic fabric of the region is being strained by the new levy.
Una BJP MLA Satpal Satti, who led the protesters from the Himachal side, declared that the tax hike would adversely impact the state’s tourism sector. He affirmed that the border areas have functioned as shared spaces for decades and noted that such a heavy tax is a significant deterrent for visitors. “This is a matter concerning the common people, not just a political issue,” Satti asserted, adding that he would formally raise the grievance with the state administration.
Punjab BJP vice-president Subhash Sharma maintained that administrative divisions should not create barriers for families and businesses that have been integrated for generations. He noted that the bond between Ropar and Una remains deep, with students and patients moving between the states daily. Protesters at the site warned that the agitation would intensify unless the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government restores the previous rates.
