Gurugram, Feb 22: A 19-year-old youth from Delhi has been arrested and sent to judicial custody after allegedly subjecting his live-in partner to brutal torture in Gurugram. The survivor, a biotechnology student originally from Tripura, remains in critical condition at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi after her partner reportedly set her on fire following a dispute over marriage.

The violence allegedly began on February 19 at the couple’s residence in Sector 69 when the victim sought a marital commitment. According to the police, the accused, identified as Shivam, poured sanitizer on the victim’s private parts and ignited it. He is further accused of striking her with a metal bottle and attacking her with a knife over a period of three days.

Gurugram DCP (South) Hitesh Yadav stated that the survivor was initially moved to a local government hospital before being shifted to AIIMS and subsequently Safdarjung Hospital for specialized care. The official maintained that the medical examination confirmed multiple severe injuries consistent with the victim’s account. “The survivor was in a critical state when rescue efforts began,” the DCP asserted.

The pair had reportedly met through a dating application in late 2025 before moving in together. The victim’s mother, who alerted the authorities, declared that the family was unaware of the live-in arrangement until the crisis occurred. An FIR has been registered under several sections of the law, including causing hurt by dangerous weapons and wrongful confinement.
