Alwar, April 30: Five members of a family were killed Wednesday night after their moving vehicle caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Alwar district. Police officials stated that the victims were returning to Madhya Pradesh following a pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir when the tragedy occurred near Maujpur.

The deceased have been identified as Santosh, his wife Shashi, his mother Parvati, and his two daughters, Raghani and Sakshi. All were residents of Chainpura in the Sheopur district. Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Raghuvanshi noted that although fire tenders brought the blaze under control within 15 minutes, the vehicle was completely destroyed by the time help arrived.

Investigators asserted that a short circuit likely triggered the fire, which spread rapidly due to the car’s CNG fuel system. Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Jindal maintained that the speed of the blaze left the passengers with no opportunity to exit the vehicle. Only skeletal remains were recovered from the wreckage, and officials affirmed that DNA testing will be conducted to formally establish identities.

The driver, Vinod Kumar Mehar, managed to escape the burning car but sustained life-threatening injuries. Medical officials stated that Mehar suffered burns over 80 percent of his body. He was initially stabilized at a local health facility before being transferred to a hospital in Jaipur for specialized care.
