MUMBAI, AUGUST 12 — A sudden hill collapse caused by torrential rainfall claimed two lives and left multiple residents trapped under rubble early Wednesday morning at Gaushiya Chawl in the Chirag Nagar area of Ghatkopar. Emergency responders, including the National Disaster Response Force and municipal teams, quickly converged on the dense residential tenement after the disaster struck around 3:48 AM.
First responders successfully pulled two injured teenagers, identified as eighteen-year-old Sohel Ansari and fourteen-year-old Mohamad Ansari, from the collapsed structures and shifted them to a nearby hospital for treatment. Emergency crews recovered two deceased individuals from the site as heavy machinery and search teams worked through restricted alleyways to reach six to eight individuals believed to remain buried.
Senior law enforcement personnel confirmed that sustained precipitation directly triggered the slope failure along the vulnerable settlement.
“The landslide was triggered due to rain,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde. “Two bodies have been recovered so far, and rescue operations are underway. Police personnel have been deployed at the spot along with all necessary teams for the rescue operation, including officials from the BMC, NDRF, and other agencies.”
Civic officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation initialed reports placing the incident in neighboring Kurla before clarifying the exact location at the Ghatkopar tenement. Multi-agency clearance efforts continue at the site to secure the hill slope and locate any remaining survivors beneath the debris.
