Chandigarh, August 12: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann personally met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to seek a ten-day parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara on compassionate grounds. The Chief Minister stated that the convict’s elderly mother is in fragile health and semi-conscious, creating an urgent need for a brief family reunion after three decades. Because the ongoing proceedings fall under Delhi jurisdiction, the recommendation of the Governor, who functions as the Chandigarh administrator, remains vital for moving the request forward.
Chief Minister Mann affirmed that the state administration stands ready to ensure complete stability across the region during any temporary release. Jagtar Singh Hawara, who was convicted in connection with the 1995 assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, has been serving his sentence in Burail Jail. After an earlier capital sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, his family has sought temporary release strictly to address pressing domestic health concerns.
“Jagtar Singh Hawara has been lodged in Burail Jail, Chandigarh, for the last 31 years. His mother is old and suffering from age-related health issues and is currently semi-conscious. In view of her deteriorating health condition, I have requested the Governor to kindly consider granting 10 days’ parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara at the earliest so that he can meet his mother,” Chief Minister Mann declared.
“Being the administrator of Chandigarh, the recommendation of the governor is necessary for a decision in this regard. Therefore, considering the humanitarian aspect of the matter and the deteriorating health condition of Jagtar Singh Hawara’s mother, I have urged the Governor to take a decision at the earliest,” the Chief Minister maintained.
Addressing administrative safeguards, Chief Minister Mann declared that local authorities are fully prepared to preserve public tranquility throughout the proposed visit. Assurances from the family and community representatives have further reinforced the government’s confidence in handling the process smoothly.
“The state government takes full responsibility for the law and order situation in the wake of Jagtar Singh Hawara’s visit to his home. His supporters and family members have also assured their full support to the state government in this regard,” Chief Minister Mann asserted.
“The state government is fully committed to maintaining law and order and protecting the hard-earned peace of Punjab. No stone will be left unturned for this noble cause. I have also assured the Governor of full support and cooperation from the state government in pursuing this matter with the Centre,” Chief Minister Mann added.
