Police and Hate Crime Units Probe Attack on Worshippers at Local Gurdwara

Edmonton, August 22: Two men sustained injuries early Friday morning after an intruder attacked them with a screwdriver inside the Nanaksar Sikh Gurdwara in Edmonton, leading to the arrest of a repeat offender released from custody just twenty-four hours earlier.

The twenty-seven-year-old suspect, who possesses a violent criminal record spanning over ten years, entered the sanctuary around five in the morning. When temple staff confronted him as he attempted to move toward the main prayer space, the encounter turned violent. Two male patrons, aged seventy-five and fifty-one, suffered non-life-threatening screwdriver wounds before witnesses managed to physically restrain the assailant until officers arrived at five-ten. Emergency services transported both victims to the hospital shortly after.

Law enforcement first received alerts regarding the man walking into oncoming traffic on Highway fifteen near Horsehill Road around four-forty-nine am, minutes before calls reporting the violence inside the place of worship poured in.

The Investigative Response Team, alongside the Hate Crimes Unit, currently manages the inquiry to assess if bias motivated the assault.

“We are thankful that this morning’s event did not result in more significant injuries or deaths but also recognise that the trauma experienced by the victims and their community cannot be understated,” Edmonton Police Service Chief Warren Drieche asserted. He maintained that violence of this nature remains unacceptable and declared that investigators take the safety of local residents seriously.

National leadership quickly addressed the incident as news spread across the country.

“No one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship,” Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed. He expressed solidarity with the victims and praised the quick response of local law enforcement.

Authorities state charges remain pending, and officials have withheld the suspect’s identity.
