NEW DELHI, SEPT 29: The Supreme Court has agreed to take up a public interest litigation next week requesting directions to restrain Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar from performing official functions.
The petition emphasizes reports highlighting that approximately 14 decisions were issued in the name of the Election Commission between October 2025 and August 2026. These actions were reportedly taken despite formal objections logged by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
Legal representatives presenting the matter maintained that the functioning of the election body requires collective decision-making as outlined under constitutional provisions. The petition asserts that issuing operational orders despite recorded dissent from fellow members impacts the institutional framework of the commission.
The apex court noted the submission and affirmed that the matter will be listed for detailed hearing during the upcoming week.
