ADGP Sanctioned to Lead Chandigarh Police

Chandigarh, 10 January 2025 – The central government has reshaped Chandigarh Police leadership by sanctioning the post of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) as the top position in the force, replacing the earlier structure where Director General of Police (DGP) appointments were made without a formal designation.

Under the revised structure, the police force will now be headed by an ADGP, with the ministry of personnel formalizing the move through a notification. “IPS officers with ADGP rank have been posted as DGP Chandigarh in the past. Now, with a sanctioned post, the head of the force will officially be ADGP,” explained a police officer.

Chandigarh Police, established in 1966 when the city became a Union Territory, initially had its leadership as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). In 1981, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) post was introduced and retained until 2017, when Tajender Singh Luthra was promoted as Chandigarh’s first DGP. This practice of appointing DGPs based on promotions has now ended.

Currently, ADGP-level officer Surender Singh Yadav leads the Chandigarh Police. His appointment aligns with the newly formalized structure and will not result in leadership changes.

The notification also includes the sanctioning of a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) post, which had remained vacant for years. The amended hierarchy positions the ADGP below the DGP but above the IGP in the state police structure, with eligibility requiring at least 25 years of service for ADGP and 30 years for DGP appointments.

The restructured Chandigarh Police now comprises seven sanctioned IPS posts: ADGP, IGP, DIG, and four SPs overseeing security, city operations, crime intelligence, and headquarters. The senior-most SP continues to hold additional SSP responsibilities.

The changes are part of broader reforms initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which recently redesignated the UT administrator’s adviser as chief secretary.
