New Delhi, 22 December 2024: Multiple threatening emails targeting schools in Delhi, including Venkateswara Global School in Rohini, have raised alarms. Investigations revealed that some of these emails were sent by students within the same schools.
The Rohini District Cyber Cell traced a threatening email received at Venkateswara Global School on November 29. A class VII student from the school, along with his sister, was questioned by the police. The pair admitted to sending the threats due to exam-related stress.
After counseling, the students were released to their families with a strict warning.
Police also discovered a similar bomb threat received by Delhi City School in Rohini, though investigators confirmed no further connection to the mass mailings that have targeted other schools across the capital.
Authorities have clarified that the arrested students acted alone, sending threats for personal reasons, and are not involved in the wider wave of bomb threats sent to multiple schools in recent days.
Delhi Police has requested assistance from Interpol through central agencies as they continue to investigate the mass email threats.
Over the past two months, Delhi has experienced a significant surge in bomb threat emails targeting educational institutions. On December 9, at least 40 schools received such threats, demanding $30,000, leading to evacuations and thorough searches by authorities.
This incident followed a pattern of similar threats throughout the year. From January to mid-November, Indian airlines and airports received 999 hoax bomb threats, resulting in 12 arrests.
In the days following December 9, additional threats were reported. On December 14, eight schools, including Delhi Public School (DPS) RK Puram, received emails threatening explosions using “bomb vests.”
By December 17, the frequency of these threats had escalated, with around 20 schools, including DPS RK Puram, receiving bomb threat emails. This marked the fifth such incident in nine days.
Authorities have conducted extensive investigations into these threats, which have predominantly turned out to be hoaxes. Despite the lack of actual explosives, the incidents have caused significant disruption and concern among students, parents, and educational staff.
The pattern of these threats underscores the need for heightened vigilance and robust security measures in educational institutions across Delhi. While many of the threats have been hoaxes, the potential for real danger remains, necessitating continued diligence from law enforcement and school administrations.
