New Delhi, 6 January 2025: BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri is under fire after comparing road development in Kalkaji constituency to “Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks” during an election campaign. The remark, which went viral on social media, drew condemnation from opposition parties and leaders within his own party, sparking demands for an apology.
In a video circulating online, Bidhuri assured voters, “Just as we developed roads in Okhla and Sangam Vihar, we will ensure roads in Kalkaji are like Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks.” Drawing parallels, Bidhuri pointed to similar comments made by RJD leader Lalu Prasad in the past regarding BJP MP Hema Malini, questioning why those remarks went unchallenged. “If this is a mistake, then the one who committed it first should apologise. Isn’t Hema Malini a woman?” he argued.
Congress leaders denounced the comment, accusing Bidhuri and the BJP of harboring an anti-women mindset. Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate stated, “Bidhuri’s statement is not just shameful but reflects the BJP’s anti-women thinking. The BJP leadership owes an apology not just to Priyanka Gandhi but to all women.”
Delhi Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba also slammed Bidhuri, stating, “Will Kalkaji choose a representative who disrespects women and the dignity of the House?” Lamba led Mahila Congress workers in burning an effigy of Bidhuri during a protest.
Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva distanced himself from the comments, emphasizing the importance of respecting women and exercising restraint in public statements. “Such remarks should be avoided. At the same time, the Congress cannot ignore the objectionable statements made by its leaders in the past,” Sachdeva added. BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat echoed these sentiments, stating, “A politician should think carefully before making public remarks.”
Bidhuri, known for past controversies, expressed regret over the backlash. In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, he claimed his remarks were misinterpreted. “It was not my intention to insult anyone. If my comment hurt anyone, I express regret,” he wrote.
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi criticized the BJP for fielding a candidate with an “anti-women mindset.” She called on voters, particularly women, to reject such attitudes in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Bidhuri’s remarks follow previous controversies, including his use of derogatory language in Parliament against BSP MP Danish Ali last year, which led to widespread condemnation and a complaint filed with the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee.
The incident has reignited discussions on misogyny and decorum in public discourse, with voters in Kalkaji heading to the polls next month.
