Canada Increases Application, Processing Fees

Chandigarh, December 1, 2024 – In a move that has shocked many, the Canadian government has announced an increase in application and processing fees for various types of temporary resident applications. This includes fees for visitors, workers, and students applying to come to Canada. The decision, effective from today, is expected to significantly affect individuals from Punjab, particularly students and workers already in Canada.

The fee hikes, announced by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), cover several types of applications, including temporary resident status for visitors, work permits, student visas, as well as applications for authorization to return to Canada and Temporary Resident Permits (TRP). Notably, the increases will also impact individuals seeking criminal rehabilitation, including those with serious criminal offenses in their past.

A Heavy Financial Burden for Punjab’s Youth

The biggest impact of these increased fees will likely be felt by the youth from Punjab who are either studying or working in Canada. A large number of Punjabis are employed in Canada’s labor market or enrolled in its educational institutions, and many are already facing financial struggles due to the high cost of living and education. With annual expenses, including tuition and living costs, reaching up to 25 to 30 lakh rupees for a student, the fee hike is expected to add further financial strain.

Experts in study visas and immigration suggest that the fee increase could deter many potential students from pursuing their Canadian dream. The change is also likely to lead to increased challenges for existing residents as they renew permits or apply for new authorizations.

This development adds to the growing list of challenges facing prospective immigrants to Canada, especially those from Punjab, who have long considered the country a top destination for education and work opportunities.
