CHANDIGARH: The appointment of Acting Chief Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as the permanent Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court remains pending, as the Central Government awaits the official opinion of the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government. The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, formally recommended Justice Mishra for the top judicial post on August 6.
Justice Mishra, whose parent court is the Allahabad High Court, was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2025. Following the elevation of former Chief Justice Sheel Nagu to the Supreme Court, he assumed charge as Acting Chief Justice on June 2. In accordance with established procedure, the Union Law Ministry forwarded the Collegium’s recommendation to the state government for its comments. Official sources indicate that state authorities are currently processing the details, and the appointment will proceed once the necessary communications are completed.
