Chandigarh: The Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) has given a two-month ultimatum to 7,308 registered street vendors who owe ₹75 crore in unpaid fees.
During a town vending committee meeting on Saturday, the MC revealed that out of 10,903 registered street vendors, only 3,595 are consistently paying their dues.
The meeting, chaired by municipal commissioner and deputy commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, was the first in 16 months and lasted over four hours.
MC officials accentuated the seriousness of the situation, noting that many vendors have failed to deposit their license fees.
At least 2,352 vendors have not made any payments at all. Only those vendors with no outstanding dues will be eligible for the draw of lots for site allocations. The MC plans to take strict action against defaulters, including potential license cancellations.
While some officials suggested waiving fines for vendors unable to pay, they acknowledged that any such action would require an amendment to existing regulations and would be subject to careful consideration.
