Chandigarh, 15 December 2024: Chandigarh administration claimed second place in energy conservation at the National Energy Conservation Awards 2024, held Saturday at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, serving as the event’s chief guest, presided over the function.

Competing under Group-4—comprising Union Territories and select states—Chandigarh earned recognition for its performance in energy efficiency practices. Chief Engineer CB Ojha received the award on behalf of the administration.

The evaluation was based on the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI), a benchmark developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in partnership with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE).

The SEEI measures energy efficiency performance through criteria such as energy consumption, production, renewable energy initiatives, and infrastructure. Specific focus areas include building, industry, transport, municipal, and cross-sector operations.

According to officials, “The SEEI offers a comprehensive assessment of energy management, allowing states and UTs to understand their performance and identify improvement areas.”

BEE organizes this annual award ceremony to coincide with National Energy Conservation Day, observed globally on December 14. The initiative recognizes and rewards outstanding contributions in energy conservation under the Ministry of Power’s supervision.

States and Union Territories are categorized into four groups based on total final energy consumption (TFEC) to ensure fair comparisons among peers, officials added.

The award acknowledges Chandigarh’s advancements in promoting energy-efficient policies and renewable energy integration.
