Chandigarh, 21 February — The Union Territory Administration will soon implement a geo-fenced facial recognition system to replace the traditional attendance process for clerical staff, aiming to enhance efficiency and curb proxy attendance.
The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is conducting department-wise training sessions to familiarize employees with the system.
The training is expected to conclude by March, after which the new system will be rolled out across all major departments.
Under the new system, employees must mark attendance through a mobile app or portal, but it will only register when they are physically present at their designated office location. This measure seeks to eliminate proxy attendance, a long-standing issue in various departments.
With over 23,000 employees, including contractual and outsourced staff, different departments currently use varied attendance mechanisms—some relying on time-fenced authentication since the COVID-19 pandemic, while others still follow older methods.
The transition to facial recognition will standardize attendance procedures across all departments, ensuring employees adhere to work schedules, particularly those handling public services.
