Chandigarh, 24 December 2024: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday urged the central government to abandon its “stubbornness” and initiate talks with protesting farmers at the state’s border. The farmers are demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.

Protesting farmers, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), have been staging a sit-in at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13. Their movement came after their march to Delhi was halted by security forces.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a prominent farmer leader from Punjab, has been fasting at the Khanauri border since November 26, urging the Centre to meet their demands. On Sunday, as his hunger strike entered its 27th day, doctors declared his health condition as “critical.”

On social media, Mann called for an end to the deadlock. “If Modi ji can stop the war between Russia and Ukraine, can’t he talk to the farmers just 200 kilometers away from Delhi?” Mann wrote in a post on X, emphasizing the need for talks.

The protests have escalated as a group of 101 farmers attempted to march to Delhi three times between December 6 and 14, but were stopped by security forces in Haryana. Mann reiterated his call on December 19, asserting that it is the Centre’s responsibility to engage in dialogue with the farmers. “Every issue can be resolved through discussions,” he said.
