Mohali, January 18 — Construction at Government High School, Phase 5, was abruptly halted on Friday after district officials identified safety risks to students posed by ongoing work on the building’s first floor.

Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Damandeep Kaur and district education officer (DEO) Ginni Duggal inspected the site and ordered an immediate suspension of construction until the safety concerns are addressed. The education department’s engineering wing has been directed to submit a detailed report on the matter.

The safety issues were first raised by local MLA Kulwant Singh, who alerted the Mohali deputy commissioner in a letter. Singh detailed structural flaws in the first-floor construction, warning that they compromised the stability of the entire building, especially the ground floor.

“The construction has been progressing without proper safety checks, creating a serious hazard for both students and staff. This negligence could lead to catastrophic outcomes,” Singh stated in his letter. He also alleged violations of building codes and safety standards, emphasizing the urgent need to cordon off unsafe areas.

Calling for accountability, Singh demanded immediate corrective actions and strict action against the contractor and officials responsible. “The safety of our students and staff cannot be compromised. Such oversights are completely unacceptable,” he added.

Confirming the inspection, SDM Kaur assured that measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of the school premises. “The safety of students and staff remains our utmost priority, and appropriate steps will be taken based on the findings of the engineering team’s report,” she said.

Authorities have yet to announce a timeline for resuming construction, pending resolution of the safety concerns.
