Chandigarh, August 20: Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi announced a series of welfare initiatives and administrative reforms aimed at poor and middle-class families in Punjab if his party returns to power. Speaking in Chandigarh, the former Chief Minister committed to providing free education and healthcare services state-wide while tightening administrative measures against public corruption.
Reflecting on his temporary break from active political engagements, the parliamentarian explained his focus on higher education.
“I have been away from politics for 4.5 years, during which I conducted research and studies,” Charanjit Singh Channi stated. “Now, we will bring reforms to ensure that government officials cannot indulge in corruption. The poor and middle class should get better benefits from the welfare system. Education and healthcare will be completely free. We will bring this model to Punjab and implement it if Congress forms the government.”
Address concerns regarding his absence from a recent Congress Working Committee meeting in New Delhi, Channi clarified that he had obtained prior permission from senior party leadership.
“I told the party High Command that I did not want to miss my examination for a meeting that takes place every month,” Charanjit Singh Channi asserted, noting he was appearing for his Master’s degree examinations in Public Administration at Panjab University.
The announcement comes as major political groups, including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Shiromani Akali Dal, begin organizing for the 2027 state assembly elections.
