NEW DELHI, AUGUST 14: The United States and India are reportedly developing a joint diplomatic framework aimed at facilitating the return of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Dhaka. Senior diplomatic sources indicate that discussions involve providing guarantees for her personal safety alongside a temporary suspension of her death sentence and related legal penalties for at least one year. Over the past fortnight, American and Indian envoys have communicated these measures to senior Bangladeshi officials, including Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, to establish mutual cooperation.
High-level consultations took place between India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and US Special Envoy Sergio Gor to outline the necessary operational conditions.
The reported understanding includes provisions for guaranteeing Hasina’s safety and securing a suspension of her death sentence and other penalties for at least one year, diplomatic sources confirmed, maintaining that both nations view the reduction of political volatility in Bangladesh as crucial to broader regional security.
Diplomatic engagements have also involved high-level intelligence discussions in Dhaka to address security arrangements and political reconciliation between domestic factions. Indian intelligence officials held talks with Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Defence Adviser AKM Shamsul Islam. While the initiative addresses personal safety and legal stays, issues regarding political restrictions on the Awami League remain under review. Authorities from the United States, India, and Bangladesh have not issued formal public confirmations regarding the final terms of the proposed arrangement.
