Customs Officer Dies in Train Accident Near Phagwara

Chandigarh, November 4, 2024—Seva Ram, a 59-year-old Assistant Commissioner with the Customs Department, died after being struck by a train near the Phagwara-Jalandhar Nangal railway gate on Sunday.

The deceased officer, a resident of Sri Guru Ravidas Nagar in Jalandhar, was reportedly performing official duties at the time.

According to initial reports, Seva Ram had been preparing to take land measurements along the railway tracks.

He noticed a passenger train approaching from Phagwara toward Jalandhar and quickly moved onto an adjacent track to avoid it. However, he was struck by a freight train traveling from Jalandhar to Ludhiana, which he hadn’t seen coming. The impact led to his immediate death.

The Phagwara GRP Police have taken custody of the body and sent it to Civil Hospital Phagwara for a post-mortem examination. Jodh Singh, the Phagwara railway station in-charge, confirmed the officer’s identity and his role in the Customs Department.

He explained that Seva Ram had arrived at the Nangal railway gate to measure land with the assistance of a measuring tape when the tragic incident occurred.
