Sangrur, March 10 — Farm union activists, led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), staged a protest outside the residence of AAP MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj in Sangrur on Monday, accusing the Bhagwant Mann government of failing to address their demands despite repeated assurances.
The demonstration followed the breakdown of talks between farmer leaders and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Chandigarh on March 3. The meeting, which aimed to discuss nine key agricultural issues—including land ownership rights and compensation for land acquired under projects like Bharatmala—ended abruptly when Mann walked out, accusing farmers of turning Punjab into a “dharna state” by planning road and rail blockades.
Addressing the gathering, Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan criticized the chief minister for backing out of commitments. “The CM has denied his own promises. If all our demands are linked to the central government, why did he spend two hours debating with us?” he said.
Ugrahan accused the Punjab government of attempting to discredit the farmers’ movement. “We fear no one. This struggle is for our rights, and we will not be silenced,” he asserted.
He also responded to BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu’s recent remark that farmers would be jailed in Dibrugarh if the BJP came to power in 2027. “Let them dream, we won’t stop them,” Ugrahan said.
The SKM is set to meet on March 15 to decide its next course of action.
