Chandigarh, January 27 – Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema condemned the vandalism of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s statue in Amritsar during the 76th Republic Day, calling it a “dastardly act.”

The minister assured swift action, underlining the government’s commitment to bring all conspirators to justice.

Cheema confirmed that the accused has been arrested and a thorough investigation is underway to identify the real perpetrators behind the incident.

“The Punjab government will not rest until every conspirator is held accountable,” he stated.

Urging citizens to maintain peace and harmony, Cheema mentioned the importance of upholding Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.

He also stressed that Punjab, a land of cultural and spiritual richness, would stand united against acts of hatred and division.

Punjab Police on Sunday (January 26, 2025) arrested a man hailing from Moga district, who allegedly attempted to damage the statue of Ambedkar at the Town Hall on Heritage Street that leads to the Golden Temple. The Amritsar Police Commissionerate arrested the accused after registering an FIR.

A purported video of the incident was circulated on social media in which the man could be seen climbing up the statue using a long steel ladder carrying a hammer.
