Former Karnataka CM Krishna Dies at 92

Bengaluru, 10 December 2024: SM Krishna, former Chief Minister of Karnataka and a key figure in India’s political and economic landscape, passed away on Tuesday at his Bengaluru residence after a prolonged illness.

The 92-year-old leader, known for his transformative role in shaping Bengaluru as a global technology hub, leaves behind a legacy that reshaped Karnataka and influenced India’s foreign policy.

Krishna served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004, during which he spearheaded the development of Bengaluru’s IT and biotechnology sectors, earning the city its reputation as the “Silicon Valley of India.” His leadership also extended to the national stage, where he played a pivotal role as India’s Minister of External Affairs from 2009 to 2012.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences, describing Krishna’s contributions as unparalleled. “His tenure as Chief Minister marked a turning point for Karnataka, especially in the IT-BT sector. His vision and leadership have left an indelible mark on the state. Karnataka will forever be indebted to him,” Siddaramaiah said.

Recollecting Krishna’s influence, Siddaramaiah added, “He was my guide during my early years in the Congress. His disciplined life, gentlemanly conduct, and foresight serve as a role model for aspiring politicians. His passing is a great loss, and I join his family and admirers in mourning.”

Krishna’s tenure as Chief Minister is credited with not only bolstering Bengaluru’s global standing but also setting a benchmark for urban development in India. Known for his strategic vision and diplomatic acumen, Krishna’s contributions to India’s foreign policy between 2009 and 2012 remain significant.

Krishna’s death marks the end of an era, leaving a profound void in both state and national politics.
