Chandigarh, Oct 3: The Congress leadership on Friday appointed former Indian hockey team captain and 61-year-old Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). He succeeds Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring in the top organizational role.
The decision marks one of the rare transitions from professional sports to high-level state politics. A former Olympian who represented India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games, Pargat Singh brings both legislative and administrative background to the helm as the party prepares its electoral roadmap for the upcoming 2027 Assembly polls. Party representatives affirmed that the leadership shift aims to consolidate internal unity and strengthen organizational outreach across the state’s regions.
Taking over the post, Pargat Singh declared his commitment to working dedicatedly with all cadres to fortify the party structure. Outgoing chief Raja Warring extended his congratulations to the newly appointed state president, offering full cooperation to the incoming leadership.
