Chandigarh, July 30: The Punjab and Haryana High Court requested a comprehensive status update from the state administration regarding concerns over unauthorized mineral extraction across Jalandhar, Moga, and Ludhiana districts.
A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Justice Rohit Kapoor issued the directives while reviewing a public interest petition brought forward by resident Sandeep Singh.
Reflecting on the core issue raised in the filing, the Bench noted:
“Prayer in the writ petition is with regard to rampant illegal mining in districts of Jalandhar, Moga and Ludhiana.”
To ensure the matter is addressed promptly before the bench re-evaluates the case, the judges instructed:
“Let a status report in this regard be filed by the State counsel, before the next date of hearing.”
Alongside the filing requirement, the court instructed local administration officials to maintain strict vigilance and halt any ongoing unauthorized extraction without delay.
“It goes without saying that in case any illegal mining is being carried out in the area, the concerned authorities shall take all steps, available at their command, to restrict such illegal mining,” the Bench stated.
