Haridwar, July 22: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee issued an advisory reminding students, faculty, and staff to adhere to existing conduct rules regarding participation in political activities and public statements. The directive follows observations of campus members expressing support for ongoing political movements on public platforms and social media.
The institute reminded stakeholders that its core purpose centers on delivering education, advancing research, and promoting learning in engineering, science, technology, and the arts. According to notified conduct regulations, campus members must obtain prior approval before participating in political discussions or events. The rules also restrict public or media statements that could impact the institute’s relationships with the central government or external organizations.
Following online discussion regarding the communication, the institute clarified that the notice is a routine administrative reminder circulated annually at the beginning of the academic session. Officials stated that the message reiterates long-standing policies rather than introducing new restrictions.
In a public statement, the administration affirmed a clear boundary between personal opinions shared by individuals and official communications issued by authorized institutional channels.
“The communication being referred to is an internal advisory circulated among students, faculty, and staff at the commencement of each academic session. Similar advisories are routinely issued every year in accordance with the institute’s existing notified conduct rules and do not constitute any new directive or policy,” stated IIT Roorkee Media Cell In-charge Sonika Srivastava.
The institute maintained that the communication should be understood within the framework of its established operational guidelines.
