New Delhi, July 22: A delegation of opposition Members of Parliament will visit climate activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram to persuade him to end his 25-day fast. Sources maintained that the lawmakers plan to offer firm assurances that concerns regarding exam irregularities and systemic accountability will be raised in the upcoming session of Parliament.
The visiting group includes Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose, and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas.
Speaking on his position earlier, Wangchuk affirmed that he would call off his fast if political leaders formally assured him that education accountability would be taken up in the House. However, following recent police action against student protesters, the activist declared that his indefinite hunger strike would continue until such explicit guarantees were delivered by elected representatives.
Sources asserted that the opposition delegation aims to address these conditions directly during the hospital visit, pressing Wangchuk to prioritize his health while promising to champion the cause on the floor of Parliament.
