Chandigarh, Sept 21: A resident of Himachal Pradesh faces criminal charges after allegedly deploying spyware and private investigators to compromise his estranged wife’s digital devices. Following a detailed investigation, Haryana Police registered a case against Kamal Raj and two of his employees under the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for data theft and privacy breach.
The legal action originated from a complaint lodged by Jaspreet Kaur, a Chandigarh native, who ran a financial advisory firm, M/s Omkar Financial Services, with her ex-husband inside Chandimandir Military Station. Although the couple lived separately starting in September 2022, they continued operating their business as equal partners. Amid marital friction, Kamal Raj suspected his wife of an illicit relationship with an Army officer.
To substantiate his allegations, Kamal Raj allegedly bugged his wife’s vehicle, home, and digital hardware, utilizing third-party tools such as QuickSpy to monitor call logs, WhatsApp and Signal communications, credit card transactions, and CCTV footage. In August 2024, he submitted a formal complaint to Western Command against a Major-ranked Army doctor and subsequently initiated divorce proceedings in a Panchkula court.
During the subsequent military Court of Inquiry, Kamal Raj stated that he obtained call details, screenshots, and audio recordings through private investigators and specialized software. The Army tribunal, presided over by Lt Col Narender Pal Singh, cleared the officer of all charges in December 2024, citing the unreliability of third-party digital content lacking original source verification.
The couple later obtained a mutual divorce in July 2025. Subsequently, Jaspreet Kaur pursued legal recourse, filing a defamation case and submitting an official complaint to Haryana Police on May 9. She asserted that the unauthorized installation of spyware was intended to compel her into forfeiting alimony rights while severely harming her professional reputation.
Responding to the allegations, Kamal Raj maintained that he experienced severe mental trauma and characterized the proceedings as an instance of cruelty against him. Panchkula Commissioner of Police Pankaj Nain stated that the matter remains under active investigation to determine the exact methods used to compromise the devices. Cyber forensics experts noted that software of this nature requires physical access or targeted interaction, allowing remote access to device functions and call records once installed.
