Opposition MPs Protest in Parliament Over Adani Issue

New Delhi, 12 December 2024: On Thursday, several opposition MPs staged a protest inside the Parliament complex, carrying placards with Hindi letters that together read “desh bikne nahin denge” (will not let the country be sold off), as they reiterated their demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the ongoing Adani issue.

The demonstration, led by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saw MPs from Congress, the DMK, and Left parties standing at the Makar Dwar steps and in front of Samvidhan Sadan.

They raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s alleged collusion with industrialist Gautam Adani, calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.

This protest is the latest in a series of daily demonstrations organized by the Congress party over the Adani issue.

Earlier on Wednesday, opposition MPs greeted their BJP counterparts on the Parliament premises, holding a tricolour in the form of a card in one hand and a red rose in the other.

The opposition leaders urged the ruling party to ensure the House functions smoothly and that all issues, including the Adani matter, be addressed. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi took the opportunity to offer the tricolour card to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as he entered the main Parliament building, symbolizing their call for parliamentary accountability.

Protests by opposition MPs have escalated in recent days. On Tuesday, several MPs carried dark blue ‘jholas’ featuring caricatures of Prime Minister Modi and industrialist Adani, with the words “Modi-Adani Bhai-Bhai” written on the opposite side.

The protests also saw Rahul Gandhi conducting a mock “interview” over the Adani issue, with Congress members donning masks of Modi and Adani to underscore the allegations of corruption and favoritism.

Since the start of the Winter session, these protests have intensified, with opposition parties, particularly Congress, calling for a JPC probe into the Adani issue.

The protests were fueled further after the recent indictment of Adani and other company officials in a US court. Opposition leaders argue that this indictment substantiates their demand for a joint parliamentary investigation into what they claim are widespread financial irregularities and scams involving the Adani Group.

Rahul Gandhi has consistently called for the immediate arrest of Adani, accusing him of corruption. Meanwhile, the Adani Group has vehemently denied the allegations, dismissing them as “baseless” and continuing to assert that their business dealings are above board.

The ongoing protests underscore the growing political pressure on the government to address the allegations against Adani and investigate the matter through a parliamentary inquiry.
