Panchkula, 6 January 2024: Police in Panchkula have launched a manhunt for a Raipur Rani resident accused of killing his six-year-old stepdaughter during a domestic altercation in Taprian village.

According to the victim’s mother, Renu, the tragedy unfolded on the night of January 3 when her husband, Anil Kumar, allegedly assaulted her and her daughters while intoxicated. “He slapped and verbally abused me and the children,” Renu stated in her complaint. Later that night, she found her younger daughter, Sapna, unresponsive and confronted her husband, who fled immediately.

The next morning, Renu sought help from her brother-in-law, Shiv Kailash, who discovered Sapna had died and called the police. Officers from Raipur Rani police station, along with a crime scene investigation team, examined the house and found the child’s body with visible injuries near her left ear and cheek.

A case of murder under Section 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against Anil Kumar. If convicted, the charge could result in the death penalty, life imprisonment, or a fine.

Renu told police that she married Kumar a year ago and moved to Taprian village with her two daughters from a previous marriage. She alleged that her husband, who had a history of alcohol abuse, frequently subjected her and her daughters to physical violence. “He was particularly abusive when drunk,” she claimed.

The child’s body was sent to Panchkula civil hospital for a postmortem examination. Authorities are continuing their search for Anil Kumar, with officer Man Singh leading the investigation.
