Chandigarh, Oct 4: Panjab University’s trajectory in international academic standings faced a setback as the institution slipped to the 701-800 tier in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, following a three-year placement in the 601-800 bracket. Meanwhile, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences emerged as the leading regional institution in the assessment, securing a position in the 451-500 global band. Comparative performance metrics across research productivity and industry coordination highlighted operational areas impacting the university’s overall evaluation score.
University officials stated that the outcome should not be viewed as a structural decline in academic performance. Panjab University Registrar Yajvender Pal Verma maintained that the institution has continued to record progress across internal indicators, asserting that research quality remains a core strength despite external operational constraints such as faculty shortages. Globally, the University of Oxford retained the top position for the eleventh consecutive year, while the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, emerged as the highest-placed Indian institution at 254th. Several other public and private regional institutions, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Chitkara University, and Thapar Institute, shared placements within the 701-800 bracket. The latest standings come shortly after Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan visited the campus and urged the academic community to target a position among the global top 100 within five years.
