New Delhi, 13 December 2024: In a sharp critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his administration, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the BJP-led government of undermining the Constitution while remaining indifferent to incidents of violence in Manipur and Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district.

Speaking during her maiden address in the Lok Sabha, the newly elected Wayanad MP characterized the Constitution as a shield of justice, unity, and freedom of expression but alleged the government has actively sought to dismantle its principles over the past decade.

“The prime minister touches his forehead to the Constitution, yet when cries for justice arise from Sambhal, Hathras, and Manipur, there isn’t a wrinkle on his forehead,” she said, adding, “It seems he hasn’t understood that this is Bharat ka Samvidhan, not Sangh ka Vidhan.”

Pointing to what she described as deliberate efforts to weaken reservation policies, Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of leveraging lateral entries and privatization as tools for dismantling constitutional safeguards. She further claimed the administration might have initiated steps to amend the Constitution if the recent Lok Sabha election results had played out differently.

“Let’s not forget, the government is now championing the Constitution because they know the people of this country will keep it alive,” she said. She suggested that rising calls for a caste-based census from the public—and even the ruling party’s engagement with the topic—stemmed from the impact of the electoral outcome.

Referring to the BJP’s rhetoric during the elections, she criticized the party’s response to opposition demands for caste data, saying, “When we advocated for a caste-based census, they resorted to talking about cattle and mangalsutra thefts instead of addressing real issues.”

Priyanka Gandhi also accused the government of fostering divisive politics, arguing that the Constitution provides a message of unity that the ruling party has failed to uphold.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), she noted, secured 293 seats in this year’s Lok Sabha elections, with 240 won by the BJP alone—well above the 272 required for a majority. She urged the government to abandon what she alleged were divisive tactics and heed the Constitution’s true principles, which she said resonate strongly with the Indian electorate.
